(May 29, 2026) SCOTTS VALLEY, CA – The Santa Margarita Groundwater Agency (SMGWA or Agency), formed in 2017 to comply with California’s Sustainable Groundwater Management Act, announced it has a board vacancy for a Well Owner Alternate Representative and applications are now being accepted for the position. The public agency serves communities in the San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley areas.
To be eligible, applicants must either own, manage, or be served by: 1) a private or shared domestic well; 2) a small water system well; or 3) an irrigation well used for commercial, industrial, institutional, recreational, or agricultural purposes. This well must be located within the Santa Margarita Groundwater Basin. They must also be able to meet the time commitment of approximately 5 to 10 hours per quarter, including evenings. The term is for 3 years. The position is unpaid.
An ideal candidate will have a demonstrated ability to work with others in a collaborative setting. They will have the means and motivation to communicate with the community they are representing. They will have knowledge and experience that will benefit the Agency and the implementation of the Basin Groundwater Sustainability Plan.

The Santa Margarita Groundwater Agency is a joint powers authority comprised of the San Lorenzo Valley Water District, Scotts Valley Water District and the County of Santa Cruz, to oversee the groundwater management activities in the Santa Margarita Groundwater Basin in Santa Cruz County, California. The Agency was established in 2017. The Board of Directors includes two board members from each of the member agencies, one from the City of Scotts Valley, one from the City of Santa Cruz, one from the Mount Hermon Association Community Water System and two well owner representatives.
